By far the best way to see the unique Parana River Delta area of Greater Buenos Aires is on a boat.

We signed up with BYT Argentina to take their "Delta Expedition" tour. The $30 US fee included transportation to the town of Tigre (about 18 miles or 28km north of Buenos Aires City), a bilingual guide (English & Spanish) and a ride on a comfortable covered river boat.

The tour bus dropped us off at Estacion Fluvial Domingo Faustino Sarmiento where we boarded the river boat and began cruising the Parana River Delta.

The most interesting part of the tour was seeing how the "islenos" (island residents) live out their daily lives on tiny islands spread throughout the Parana Delta. Some had lavish homes while others lived in much more modest structures.

Every "isleno" resident must travel via boat to go shopping, to school, or to buy groceries or other supplies. During the tour we passed several floating general store boats that sold essential household items such as propane gas, water, rice, flour, charcoal, gasoline and other food items. The small percentage of the several thousand residents who don't own a boat, get around by taking the "lancha colectiva" (collective boat) which is similar to a city bus but on the water.

In the future, I'd love to visit the area again and stay at one of the hotels tucked away on the more secluded islands. There are many restaurants, volleyball courts, beaches, clubs, bars, hostels, campgrounds and other recreational opportunities in the area.

The BYT Argentina Parana River Delta Expedition tour is given every day of the week at 9:30 AM and ends in the early afternoon. A bonus of this tour is the bus ride from Buenos Aires city that allows you to see the beautiful suburbs of San Isidro and the presidential palace of "Quinta de Olivos".
